National organisation dedicated to advancing the Child's Right to Play, founded in 1972. They are asking employers, groups, etc, using CRB disclosures about their child protection practice since they started using CRB, or have had them undertaken, to complete a survey, results of which will be passed on to the Criminal Records Bureau and the Home Office. The survey can be downloaded from www.fairplayforchildren.org.
The Mosquito Anti-Teen Device Poll is marketed to clear children away from shops, etc, by emitting a high pitch sound which older people cannot hear. The device is condemned by the Children's Commissioner for England, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child and other organisations, but it has not been banned by government. BSL Bible translation - reviewers sought added 31.10.08
The BSL Bible Translation Project is translating the whole Christian Bible into British Sign Language. Teams of bilingual deaf and hearing people plus Bible experts are translating the Bible. Researchers appeal for Samaritans study added 8.9.08
Mental health researchers at the University of Nottingham are appealing for people who have contacted the Samaritans to come forward to take part in a new study. They have been commissioned by the Samaritans to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of Samaritans' three main services - the 24 hour confidential helpline, email and SMS text message support systems. The results of the research will help the charity to develop their services, enabling them to provide more effective emotional support. Many children face an increased risk of diabetes, cancer, heart disease and depression in later life because of their existing lifestyles. A new campaign - Change4Life - which is supported by the Department of Health, encourages families to eat well, move more and live longer. There are already many examples of successful initiatives that encourage families to lead healthier lifestyles. Senior Persons' Council - Horsham District Council added 9.6.08
Older residents of the Horsham district are invited to contribute ideas and concerns to the Senior Persons' Council. Established in 2005, it aims to give older people an opportunity to put forward their ideas to the District Council and to undertake their own initiatives to benefit the local community. Recent examples have included helping to produce a 'highway code for mobility scooter users' leaflet; and campaigning about the closure of local post offices. Sussex Cancer Network added 7.4.08
A group of cancer patients and carers working with professionals in the NHS to improve cancer care for everyone. The network is interested in hearing from people who have recent experience of cancer care locally, particularly people who are housebound, live in rural communities, and people from different backgrounds or cultures. They focus on issues that are important to people affected by cancer so that they can help influence things from the patient and carer perspective. Members are happy to visit support groups to talk about the work they do, and they welcome new members.

A Credit Union is a new way for vulnerable people living in West Sussex to save and/or borrow money. It is a savings and loan co-operative that is owned by its members with no outside shareholders. As a member you can borrow money at competitive interest rates and your savings are protected by the Financial Services and Compensation Scheme, the same protection given to customers of banks and building societies. The credit union needs 1000 pledges to enable it to start business. It is regulated by the Financial Services Authority (FSA). Forum for parents and carers of children and young people with learning difficulties and other disabilities to discuss issues affecting them. It is a chance for parents to have greater involvement in decisions about current services, the support offered or planned changes; share experiences with other parents; and a voice to help ensure children are fully included in society and have access to the support and facilities necessary to sustain and improve their well-being.
